Carchidi is a 1977 Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) graduate and has been with The Philadelphia Inquirer since 1984. Prior to that, he worked with the Cam–Glo newspapers and The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin.

He has been covering South Jersey high school sports for nearly 35 years, starting while a student at Sterling High School. Carchidi also covered college and professional sports for The Inquirer and has authored "Bill Campbell The Voice of Philadelphia Sports"
